RESEARCH: THE ART OF THE TITLE

Today I looked at the opening scene of Dexter. I looked at the techniques and film edits they used in the opening scene. We discussed as a class how these film techniques affect the mood of the opening scene. I thought this was a really good opening scene as it was very interesting and made you want too keep watching more and more which is clever for an opening scene of a show. I liked the camera angles and effects they did when filming this. They zoomed in a lot which gave it a mysterious effect, and also made everything relate to the show. They used ketchup to look like blood, and the knife to cut the orange, like its cutting someone, he also uses dental floss which looks effective because it can be made to look like he's trying to strangle someone or kill someone, when really its just him flossing his teeth,. This is very clever and interesting compared to some other openings. I wanted to watch this because I thought it looked really scary and interesting. It looked much better than something else you would normally watch.

The colours are all quite bold and bright, There are not any faded colours or any colours that look faint or boring. There all bright and colourful. This can draw attention to the show.

The genre of this show would be a thriller, or a crime scene show.  Its also a black comedy.

  1. Tammy, there is a lot that I expected to find on your blog but it is not posted. Please attend a lunch time clinic. See me next lesson.
In this textual analysis, you make a few analytical points but you need to write in a more detailed analytical way with specific examples. Your best sections are, for example, your remarks about false leads such as the dental floss.
You should write, for example: The opening extreme close up of a mosquito sucking Dexter's blood leads into a shot of Dexter's hand sharply squashing it, with blood splatters that set the scene for the title which seems to drip blood. Extreme close ups of Dexter shaving his neck with repellent enhanced scraping sounds are followed by yet more blood dripping into the basin. The genre of the film is clearly signalled in the opening few seconds..'
